Communications Software & Support


  • Installs and maintains host, TCP/IP, and SNA communications systems software.
  • Provides assistance to users with the configuration and use of remote hardware and software devices.
  • Provides problem determination and resolution of issues related to communications hardware and software.
  • Manages and supports the South Carolina Shared Communications Network as well as the ISO's local SNA and LAN Host definitions.
  • Maintains a test LAN to evaluate new technologies and develop strategies for future implementation.
  • Conducts research into Host/Client relationships for distributed development and operation.



The Communication Support staff is responsible for real-time monitoring and control of the remote SNA and multi-protocol networks supported by the ISO. The communications staff spends the majority of their day maintaining and monitoring the network from the communications support area in the ISO computer room. The network area contains the necessary equipment and tools to receive alerts and to assist the staff in performing their function. They provide consulting with OIR internal and external customers on the design and installation of data circuits, DSUs, routers, and all other database and all related network historical data for problem tracking and future planning.






Database Support


  • Installs and maintains database software on mainframe computer.
  • Secures databases and permits user access to database applications.
  • Migrates applications from the development cycle to a production mode.
  • Assists application programmers with error and design resolutions.
  • Integrates PC software with mainframe software for PC retrieval of mainframe data.




Operating System Support


  • Install, maintain and support the MVS operating system and selected program products.
  • Assist users with use of program products.
  • Assist system operations with operational problems.
  • Assist in the identification of and resolution of hardwar e and software errors.
  • Research and recommend software and hardware acquisitions and upgrades.




Unix Services Support
  • Install, maintain and support Unix operating systems and selected program products.Assist users with use of program products.
  • Manage and administer distributed Unix environment.
  • Assist in the identification of and solution of hardware and software issues associated with enterprise level computing.
